We are so very fortunate to have participated in this monumental event such as the most recent Remembrance Festival on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th November 2018. Marking the 100th anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914 – 1918). This centenary event was put together by the Bathurst RSL Sub Branch with the help of our very own, Wendy Jenkins. With months in the lead up to this weekend, the Bathurst City & RSL Concert Band rehearsed around 30 pieces showcasing a range of genres.

On the Saturday 10th, we hosted a Band Festival in Machattie Park. We had local and visiting bands performing in three locations around the park, in front of the rotunda and in front of the Lewin’s Gate on William Street side of Machattie Park. There was food and drinks available from the Lions Club and CWA, who all kindly donated their time in providing a sausage sizzle picnic in the park, and audience appreciation for the bands (It’s always nice to hear applause!).

The Assumption School kicked off the music at 9.30am, followed by the Carillion Band’s set including a live broadcast from 2BS at 10am to raise the flag. It was such a beautiful clear day, warm sun and low winds – perfect outside performance conditions. It was also an extremely busy day for the Committee who helped orchestrate the Saturday for smooth running.

Sunday 11th November, started off the centenary of the armistice with a thoughtful and very well presented service – one of the most beautiful and moving ceremonies that we have done so far. We also had the wonderful Macquarie Male Singers behind us as we both performed various hymns and songs before and during the service. It’s always a pleasure to perform with them! The Sunday marked the debut of our wonderful band banners! Thank you Wendy Trotter for your time and efforts in making these fabulous additions! Once the service was over, everyone was invited to stay around King’s Parade in the true fashion of 1918 celebrations! There was sack races, face painting, dancers, chalk drawings and musical entertainment!

For us, our biggest highlight of the weekend was the spectacular ending to the day! For the first time, performing with The Scots School Pipes and Drums. It was so wonderfully put by the Bathurst RSL Sub Branch President, David Mills, mentioning how fitting it is that we should finish such a wonderful weekend of celebration with the two bands most dear to the RSL Sub branch. The Bathurst City & RSL Band and The Scots School Pipes and Drums service the sub branch’s ceremonies throughout the year and they are most appreciative. David also expressed, ‘how privileged we all are to now hear our own bands playing one of my all time favourites’.  Check it out below! 🙂

A massive THANK YOU to all the superb bands who have participated over this amazing weekend!

Thank you to Bathurst Arts Council, Bathurst Youth Council, Bathurst Historical Society, Kathleen and Makenzie from The Dance Factory, JD Events, Lithgow Men’s Shed and the face painters for your valuable assistance with activities and logistics. To Dom and George thank you for your great MC duties, St John’s ambulance, scouts and Lions Club members for their participation and generous gift of their time.

Congratulations to the Bathurst RSL Sub branch, Bathurst City & RSL Band, Macquarie Male Singers, The Scots School Pipes and Drums for a wonderful programme of events throughout the Sunday!
