Damian Bellamy!

Damien Bellamy: recipient of the ‘Jim Denmead’s Perpetual Award for Service’. 25 April 2019.

Instrument: 1st Trumpet

Service in band: I have been playing trumpet in the band for 25 years.

About me: I started learning trumpet in 1994. I was taught by the band’s previous Musical Director, Mathias Rogala-Koczorowski. I joined the band that same year. It was a huge step to be playing fairly advanced music alongside people who had a huge amount of experience compared to me. But, gradually, I was able to improve, learn and gain confidence. Looking back I can see that you are ultimately better off to be the ‘small fish in the big ocean’ as it pushes us to improve, as long as you don’t get eaten along the way! 25 years later, I am an electrician and Refrigeration/Air-conditioning mechanic. Married to Jennifer and expecting our fifth child to be born soon.

Favourite type of music played in the band: Some of the memorable music that I have played with the band are those that involve our band combining with other ensembles. Joining forces with the Bathurst Chamber orchestra and Allegri singers in the 90’s to perform huge orchestral pieces such as Finlandia, 1812 Overture and Grand March from Aida. Or in more recent times, performances with the New South Wales Police Band, Royal Australian Navy Band, The Scots School Pipes and Drums as well as the Massed Bands performing “The Great Gate of Kiev” at the Lewin’s Gate Band Festival.

Most memorable band moment: Being a part of the band has led to a variety of performance experiences from marching through the centre of Sydney for the Centenary of Federation to standing in a pre-dawn frost covered paddock sounding the Last Post. The best thing about being in the band is being with other people who share a similar interest in music at a community level. It’s a combination of having fun and a laugh, whilst fulfilling local civic and ceremonial duties. The worst thing about band is cold sores! They are a damn nuisance for trumpet players!

1995 Damian Bellamy Anzac Day Bathurst

From the Band: Damian is a valued member of our band. Over the last 25 years he has been committed in providing assistance with many of the logistics for our play-outs. He volunteered his time for a few years to be Property Officer in the committee, and has most recently been appointed Vice President in 2018. For the last two years Damien has performed the duties as the official Bugular for the Bathurst RSL Sub branch which spotlights ceremonies such as ANZAC Day. He has a wicked sense of humor and we thoroughly enjoy the fun he brings to rehearsals. We are most honoured to announce that Damien was awarded the ‘Jim Denmead’s Perpetual Award for Service’ for 2019 in the Bathurst City & RSL Concert Band.
